Despite being overall pretty horrible for just about everything else, 2020 was a great year for video game sales. Nintendo saw enormous growth in terms of Switch sales which can be attributed to a handful of factors. The first is that the entire globe has been staying inside as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic so many people have turned to games for entertainment. Another major factor is the absolute mammoth of a release that was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s a game about tranquility and relaxation that came out in March when the world needed it most. The Switch has been hard to find this year due to its popularity and now Nintendo has confirmed in its Q3 2020 earnings that it has outsold the 3DS.

Sitting comfortably at a whopping 79.87 million units sold, the Switch put last generation’s Wii U to shame with its 13.56 million units sold. It’s surpassed the 3DS’s significant 75.94 million, however, is still a ways off from the original Wii’s 101.63 million units. It would take an even more significant sales growth for the Switch to catch the original DS’s sales which have soared to 152.02 million units.

The 3DS only recently stopped production, so it seems like Nintendo is completely focused on the Switch moving forward. It’s hard to say if the Switch could ever catch the Wii or DS in terms of sales, but 79.87 million sales aren’t anything to scoff at.

There is a rumored “Switch Pro” that could be released in 2021 that might impede sales for the original Switch. It could split the consumer base into buying either the rumored pro version or the base version. That said, the Switch Lite is grouped in with the original Switch sales for their earnings report so the pro version might very well be too.
